Intelligence has been received that the ultimatum submitted by the French Commander has been rejected by the Malagaoes, and that the French troops have consequently advanced and have captured Tamatave. The Custom House there has been seized and occupied. The Hovas have fled before the advancing troops. Telegrams are to hand reporting that an Egyptian Marabout is preaching a jehad, or holy war, in the south-west of Egypt. The Times despatch on the subject adds that the Egyptian Government has already despatched a body of troops to the locality, to effect the capture of Marabout and his followers. In the House of Lords last night, the Bill for Legalising Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister was passed through Committee, and ordered to be read a third time. The Daily News in its issue this morning confirms the statement that Sir Anthony Musgrave, late Governor of Jamaica, and not Richard O’Shaughnessy, has been appointed [Governor of] Queensland, and states that Sir Anthony will sail for Australia in a few weeks. (Received June 21, 2.20 p.m.) Latest telegrams to hand from Madagascar report that the French Commander is content with the position he has now occupied at Tamatave, and has decided not to advance upon Antananarivo, the capital. It is announced that William Guidon has been appointed British Envoy to the Transvaal to open negotiations for the revision of the Anglo-Boer Convention.

The Argus to-day announces that it has despatched its Fiji special correspondent to New Guinea, and that he left Cooktown yesterday for that island. The libel case, Anderson v. Proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald, concluded to-day. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff, damages £450.
