The trial of John Davidson at the Supreme Court, Nelson, for the wilful murder of Denis Quinlan, at Lyell, on the 29th January last, was concluded late last night. The following persons were subpoenaed by the Crown to give evidence in the case :—L. Carmine, J. Whelan, P. Carroll, W. Wallace, Mrs Williams, Mrs Carroll, A. Chase, J. O’Rourke, B Scioroni, Rosana Boyle, J. Stanton, B, Thompson, F. Ullmer, 0. Morganti, T. Hubbard, Dr. Campbell, Constable Keating, Inspector Emerson, T. Short, and J. F. Clark. Our special telegram states that the Judge summed up very strongly against the prisoner. The jury retired at midnight, and after forty minutes’ deliberation returned into Court with a verdict of “Manslaughter.” The prisoner was sentenced to penal servitude for life. Captain Edwin wired yesterday afternoon :—“ Watch barometer ; bad weather is approaching between north-east and north and west; glass falling very soon, and sea heavy after 12 hours,” The Grafton left Greymouth last night, at nine o’clock, with a number of passengers for Wellington, among whom were the Hon. H. H. Lahman, M.L.C., and the representative of the district in Parliament (Mr J. Petrie), Mrs Petrie, the family, and servant ; and, not least in importance, Mr Julian Thomas, “ The Vagabond,” who will no doubt pay a visit to both Houses of Parliament, now in session. In a supplement to the Government Gazette of Thursday, June 8, received last evening, the Hon. Thos. Dick, Colonial Secretary, notifies under date sth June) that his Excellency the Governor has been pleased to disallow by-law No. 3, respecting licensing, &c., of vehicles plying for
hire in the County of Westland, made by the Westland County Council on the 14th April, 1883, under “The Counties Act 1876 Amendment Act, 1882.” Mr Lawrence J. Spyer was last evening elected to the position of permanent Secretary to the Kumara Hospital Committee, by the casting vote of the chairman. The Union Company’s steamer Mahinapua was to leave Greymouth for Dunedin and intermediate ports by this morning s tide. She takes 13840z5. 14dwts. of gold, shipped by the Bank of New Zealand. Under date Wellington, 13th June, 1883, the Postmaster-General announces that his Excellency the Governor has been pleased to cancel the authority under which the Chairmen of Boards of Education have hitherto faanked and received, free from the prepayment of postage, letters and parcels posted on the public service, and to authorise the Secretaries of Boards of Education to frank and to receive, free from the prepayment of postage, letters and parcels posted on the public service. The second charge of gold stealing against William Nassau Morton was commenced at the Resident Magistrate s Court, Greymouth, on Tuesday, before Mr Stratford, and occupied the Court all day. Although (the Argus says) the charge is similar to that already heard, and in the main the evidence very much alike, there were several new points brought out. The case occupied the Court the greater part of yesterday again.
