[united press association.] Dunedin, May 30. Aynsley’s Mosgiel hotel was burnt down last evening. Immediately after the fire George Cardogs was missed, and on search being made, his trunk was found among the ashes. The fire is said to be due to the bursting of a kerosene lamp. Charles Vickers, sentenced to five years at last sittings of the Supreme Court, effected his escape from gaol this morning. Two hours afterwards he cilled at the residence of Warrington,
a settler, and threatened to shoot Mrs Warrington. He got a change of clothing there. The police are in pursuit. Young Scott has been challenged by Rayner, of Melbourne, to walk 24 or 48 hours for £IOO. Scott offers to accept the challenge, if the match takes place here. Nelson, May 30. The death is announced of Mr Henry Seymour, who arrived in 1841, and who wus one of the founders of the firm lately known as N. Edwards and Co., and now carried on as J. H. Cocks and Co. The deceased was grandfather of Mr C. Y. Fell, the present Mayor, and he died in England, where he has resided for many years, aged 86. He was well-known by old colonists.
