MR. PARNELL, M.P.

It having J'been intimated to Mr Parnell, M.P., that the movement for presenting him with a money, testimonial for the purpose of freeing the Avondale estate from encumbrance, had been taken up in the United States on a-somewhat extensivescale, the hon. member for Cork.city has addressed a letter.- on the • subject to Mr M. D. Gallagher, of the'Central Land League, New York. Writing from Palaco Chambers, Westminster,- Mr Parnell says—" I have to thank you and other friends for the offer <you .so kindly make to raise the, purpose of discharging the mortage; but, while fully appreciating the kiudness of heart which prompts your offer of help, I feel that it would be impossible for me to accept it for many reasons. I do not anticipate any embarrassment from the action of the mortagees in giving rae notice of foreclosure, as the sale, under the purchases clauses of the Land Act, which I had always intended to make to my tenants at the first convenient opportunity, will, T believe, amply suffice for- the settlement of the charge in' question. I could not, on any account, even if the circumstances were otherwise, consent to accept the kind proposals which have been made by friends in Ireland of a similar nature to your own ; much less could I permit a collection to be made-in America. Again thankiug you for the good feeling and great friendliness which have suggested your letter—l remain, . yours very truly, Charles S. . Parnell." Notwithstanding the expression of opinion on Mr ParneH's part, the subscription has been opened in Chicago by the Citizen newspaper, of that city, whose editor has within the past few daj's •" received over X2OOO dols. in answer .to his appeal. Hitherto, ia consequence of Mr Parnell's aversion to the proposal, no concerted action has been taken in Ireland, but a Committee is in,* course' offormation for the purDOSQ

of carrying the project into effect. As the member for Cork persists in selling to his tenantry, it is intended that the Avondale demesne land should be secured, and a sum of money equal to the amount required to liquidate the mortgage be invested in trust for Mr Parnell's use and benefit.
