A public meeting of the subscribers to the Fire Relief Fund will be held at the Town Hall this evening, at half-past eight o’clock, to decide upon the disposal of the fund. The first meeting of the committee of the Kumara Prospecting Association was held in the Town Hall last evening. A record of the proceedings will appear tomorrow. After a second trial of three days’ duration (most of the other trials occupying only two days) Timothy Kelly has been found guilty of the murder of Mr Burke in Phoenix Park, Dublin, on the 6th of May, 1882, and sentenced to death. The brother of Joseph Brady has been summoned and charged with being one of the persons who sent threatening letters to the foreman of the jury by which Joseph Brady, the first tried of these prisoners, was found guilty. This juryman is under continual police protection. Captain Edwin wired yesterday to expect bad weather between north-east and north and west, glass falling, and wind backing within 12 hours, and considerable sea. The Rev. Father Walsh was a passenger this morning by the coach for Christchurch. He goes on a three weeks’ retreat to Wellington. The Rev. Father O’Connor will officiate at St. Patrick’s during his absence. In the report of the proceedings of the Westland County Council yesterday, acknowledged from the West Coast Times, MrR. J. Seddon was made to say that the Donnelly’s Creek Company had “ obtained money by false pretences.” Mr Seddon writes to the editor denying having uttered the words or any other words that would convey the same meaning. A meeting of the Central Board of Education was held at the office of the Board last evening ; present Messrs Petrie (chairman), Grimmond, Warner, M‘Whirter, Rudkin, Nancarrow, Perkins, and Dr. Morice. The Board, before proceeding with the ordinary business accruing since last meeting, proceeded to deal with the last revised scale of staffs and salaries, which occupied the attention of members for some considerable time. The ordinary business of the month was then proceeded with. The sentence of death passed on Milbra Nott, at Sydney, for the murder of her lover, has been commuted to five years’ imprisonment. A branch of the Bank of New Zealand has been opened at Motueka, in charge of Mr R. W. Gibbs. Dr. Hocken, the Dunedin Coroner, was elected a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London on the Ist March last. The balance-sheet in connection with the Kaitangata Relief Fund for last year is now published. It shows that during the year ending February 17th, 1883, the amount disbursed by the Executive Committee was £I3BO, of which £1287 14s lid went in alimony. This total sum of £I3BO was obtained from the trustees, who to meet it received £1126 3s lOd as interest upan the money invested. The total amount in the Hands of the trustees is £13,666 Is 6d. Copious rains having fallen, it is said the Pacific Coast will gather the biggest harvest it has ever been blessed with. The Northern Pacific Railroad is being pushed forward as rapidly as possible. A vast system of settlement and manufactures have been projected, and Portland, in Oregon, promises to become a serious rival to San Francisco.
