Of course we expected some retort by the editor of the Hokitika Guardian for saying that the venomous effusions of “the political tinker” readily found a place in his columns —“ we suppose on aconnt of their cheapness and length,” But we did not expect him to retaliate wish such a statement as that this j mrual “never had a paid correspondent in its existence.” How does he assume to know? ' We simply say (his is an untruth j it therefore needs no argument. We should, indeed, be very sorry to pay for the like of the Kumara correspondence which periodical ! y appears in- the Guardian,

to the delectation possibly of a few tattlers and busy-bodies who talk of and discuss other people’s business, but certainly not (as a correspondent recently pointed out to the editor) to the edification of the general reader. Probably it was because we so frequently refused this correspondent’s proffered communications that he sought and found more willing receptacles for his venomous productions. If it is any benefit for the editor of the Guardian to know, we may tell him that we do “ pay for ” our “ information,” and probably more than four times as macb in the course of the month as the Guardian pays—even if he include the cherished information vouchsafed to his readers by the “ political tinker ” and “ chimney measurer.”
