Telegrams have been received from Hong Kong, stating chat great excitement prevails throughout China in consequence of the state of affairs in Tonquin and the action of the French Government in pushing, its claims in that country. The French men-of-war have been warned of the attitude of China, and ordered to keep a watch upon the coast. Owing to the slow progress which has been made with the Affirmations in Lieu of Oaths Bill in the House of Commons, the Premier has given notice that he will move that precedence be given to the measure. (Received May 2, 11.55 a.m.) It has been ascertained that the Ageut-General for New Zealand has not received any tenders for the direct steam service between New Zealand and England. The time for receiving tenders expired yesterday. The Rev. G. S. Connor, M.A., Dean of Windsor, died yesterday. Per Merchant Shipping aud Underwriters' Association :—London, April 30.—Arrived : the ships Ashmore, from Auckland 27th December'; Mercia, from Wellington sth January; Wanganui, from Wellington 10th January; Serapis, from Port Chalmers 10th February. Arrived: at New York, Catarfeld, from Auckland 3rd February. (Received May 2,2 p.m.) Evening. The trial at Dublin of James Fitz-harris,-one of the Phcenix Park prisoners, was finished to-day. The jury retired, and after a short deliberation brought in a verdict of uot guilty of murder of Lord Cavendish and Mr Burke. Amsterdam, May 1. The International Colonial Exhibition was opened here to-day with great eclat. The varions Colonial Courts are well arranged, and make a splendid show of products of the Colonies.
