[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, April* 19. A man named Smith, working at Wilding's steam sawmill, at Waipukurua, was cut in halves yesterday by falling from a log on to a twin circular saw. He was killed instantly. Dunedin, April 19. The charge of manslaughter commenced to-day against Mr and Mrs Wain at the police court. One hundred and sixty five pounds was collected here for the German flood relief funds. Christchurch, April 13. Henry Mercer, 40 years of age, attempted suicide this morning by jumping into the Avon, but was pulled out by a passer-by. Wellington, April 12. Intelligence was received this afternoon from Tenui that the telegraph office in that township was struck by lightning about 8 o'clock on Saturday night and set fire to. The operator was fortunately on the premises at the time, and succeeded in extinguishing the flames before much damage was done. All the wires in the office were brokeu by lightning, and uo fewer thau eleven poles on the Black Hill were shattered by the electric discharge.
The successful tenderer for the Crofton section of the WellingtonManawatu railway is Mr Anderson. The amount is understood to be £75,000.
