Evelyn Ashley, Under Secretary for the Colonies, in the coarse of a speeeli which he made last evening at Northampton, stated that he expected that the aunexation of New Guinea would have been undertaken by England in self defence, to prevent its acquisition by other Powers. Arrived at Plymouth, to-day, the steamship Siam, from Melbourne March Ist. Evening. The trial of Timothy Kelly for the murder of Lord Cavendish and Mr Burke commenced at Dublin to-day. Whitehead, the proprietor of the dynamite factory which was seized at Birmingham, and the dynamite conspirators, were brought up at Bowstreet Police Court to-day. Norman, a farmer, and an accomplice of the prisoners who has turned informer, gave evidence to the effect that the Fenian fraternity in New York had hatched a plot to destroy the public buildings in London; that O'Donovan Rossa had been one of the abettors; and that

Gallagher, one of the prisoners before the Court, had directed the movements of the gang. The case is still proceeding. In the House of Commons to-day, tho Hon. Evelyn Ashley, in reply to 8 question, stated that no step would be taken by the Imperial Government in regard to the annexation of New Guinea pending the receipt of a despatch from Sir Arthur Kennedy on the subject. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. ANNEXATION OF NEW GUINEA. VICTORIAN WHEAT YIELDS. PROROGATION OF THE VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT. THE POSTAL UNION. (Received April 19, 1.20 p.m.) Melbourne, April 19. The Victorian Government has invited the New South Wales and South Australian Governments to join in instructing their Agents-General in London to communicate with the Imperial authorities in support of the annexation of New Guinea. The Hon. Jas. Service has already telegraphed to Murray Smith, the Victorian representative in London, requesting him to favor the annexation.

The Victorian wheat statistics of the noithern countries has been published. They show that the last season's yield was 5,820,000 bushels, against 6,300,000 bushels last year. The Australasian is sending an agricultural reporter on a lengthened tour through the United States. (Received April 19, 10.50 p.m.) Evening.

The Victorian Parliament was prorogued to-day by his Excellency the Governor, who, in his speech on the occasion, said that the proposed annexation of New Guinea had given great satisfaction to the people of Victoria and his advisers had taken prompt action to urge its approval on the Imperial Government. The conference which had. been arranged to consider the question of entering the Postal Union would doubtless avail itself of the opportunity to consider the matter, his Excellency's advisers being anxious to promote collective action on this colonial question. Parliament stands prorogued until May 30. (Received April 19, 1.20 p.m.) Adelaide, April 19.

The advance Official Statistics of the South Australian wheat crop, last season's, show that the average has only been 4-16 bushels per acre. (Received April 19, 10.50 p.m.) Sydney, April 19.

Sailed, this afternooD, the City of New York, for San Francisco, via Auckland. She takes £24,000 specie from this port. The passenger list is very large, and includes the Right Rev.
