THE PHŒNIX PARK MURDERS.

CAREY'S EXAMINATION. — : ♦ The following completes our extracts of Carey's evidence at the examination of the prisoners charged at the Kilmainharn Police Court with feloniously and unlawfully combining and confederating with others to murder certain officials of the Government, and also assaulting and stabbing Denis Field, with intent to murder him : WHO PROVIDED THE FUNDS. " No. 1" was a respectable, gentle-manly-looking man. He never told me auy thing of his position orcircumstances. I got money from him on three occasions—two twenties and a forty. He told me there would be no limit to money; if we required £IOOO we should have it. Mullett, Cuvley, and I often talked among ourselves aa to whence the money came. We were divided in opinion. Some expressed the opinion that it came from America; some of the others said, " Perhaps we are getting some of this from the Land League." AN INCIDENT IN CdURT. At this point the witness asked to be allowed to leave the table for a short time. He was escorted out of Court, and as he passed the dock the prisoners" hissed at him, one exclaiming, " You have done all you can, you perjured scoundrel !" Glancing back, he said, " Ah ! you were all trying to forostall me." AFTER THE CRIME. Next night Curley, witness, Brady, M'Caffrey,- and "No. 1" met at M'Caffrey's, where they had the whole conuected narrative of the affair. " No 1 " gave orders that the knives should be destroyed. The blades were broken up into small bits and the handles burnt. I saw the pieces. They were similar to the knives produced here. Of the ten knives I got, I gave five to Brady. Before the assassination I had given the Winchester rifle produced here and two knives to Rinkle. I know from Cm ley and M'Caffrey that when in gaol as suspects Curley received a cheque for £5, and M'Caffrey one for £6, which he refused. They believed the money was sent by the Land League. Brady told me afterwards that the Winchester rifle and knives were removed by Kavanagb. Brady said he went himself to look for them, but they could not be found. About' the end of September I had an interview with " No 1 " at Black Rock Station. He required me to give an account of those articles. I said I thought Rinkle gave information; I afterwards resigned my position as one of the " Four." I gave my resignation to " No. 1." He accepted it, but told mo

to say nothing about it. The money I got from " No. 1 " was usually gold—but I got notes once—all English. The witness then formally identified the prisoners. He was briefly cross-ex-amined by Mr Walsh, and in answer to the question whether he had not placed his own brother in the dock, said he had taken the course he did in order to save innocent lives. -He deposed amid hisses by the prisoners that he belonged to Fenians, but not to the Supreme Council. The object of the Fenians was to separate Ireland from England, the former country being then harassed by coercion. He had no idea that Lord Frederick Cavendish was to be murdered when Burke was attacked. He was stupefied when he heard of the former's murder. On being crossexamined, Carey said he gave information regarding the murder two days a<*o, when everybody else did. He was the last person to do so. He said he had decided to give evidence directly after he was arrested, though he did not do so until Thursday. The prisoners were then committed for trial. Mr Murphy stated that ho hoped to be able to produce the man known as " No. 1." •
