A dinner was held at Stoke last evening to celebrate the 41st anniversary of the establishment of Oddfellows in Nelson and the anniversary of the past grand lodge. About 100 brethren were present. Mr Sheppard, M.H.R., was in the chair, and Mr Levestam, M.H.R., was also present. Several speakers spoke against Major Atkinson's Insurance scheme, the arrangements being that while the contributors would prove too great as a tax, Government made no provision for medical attendance, which was said to be of greater greater advantage than sick pay. The Town Committee of Education having resolved to establish a night school for lads, such school was opened last night, when 64 youths enrolled their names. This number is greatly in excess of what was expected. Auckland, April 10. A Samoau correspondent writing on March 20th says : "A Chinaman, for killing a girl, has been fairly tried by the Samoan Government by a jury of 12, six whites and six Samoans, and fally convicted of the murder. The execution is put off till Easter Monday, because the week includes Good Friday and is Passion week." It is stated at Alexandra that Mahuika's people are assembling at Te Uivia, and it is beleived that Mr

Bryce will not be allowed to go through unmolested. An Alexandra telegram of yesterday states that a meeting has been called by the Ngatimanipoto at- Kuiti, and commences to-morrow. Wahanni has gone up to the meeting, which is considered important by the Natives. Mr Bryce will doubtless go through with Mr Hursthouse on the meeting being concluded. Dunedin, April 10.
