An attempt was made to float the Austral at Fitzroy clock at Spring tide this morning, but without success, owing to the insufficient depth of water. It is probable the vessel will proceed dirrct to London about the end of May. On April 7th further complications occurred at Newcastle between the coalminers and the managers. The masters refused to agree to the eight hours' limit and other demands which have been made by the men. (Received April 9, 1 p.m.) April 9. Arrived, yesterday morning, the Manipouri, from Auckland.
Sorae of the workmen of the Prospect Waterworks have struck, owing to a reduction of their wages.
(Received April 9, 0.16 a.m.) Melbourne, April 7. Messrs C. S. Ross and Co., of this city, report the sale of a cargo of kauri pine, ex Jules Mary, at the following average prices per 100 feet:—Super hewn logs, 12s 9d ; sawn flitches, 14s 3d. Arrived, on Saturday evening, the Orient liner Potosi, from Plymouth (February 27).
The date for the Intercolonial Postal Conference is not yet fixed. It has transpired that the Secretary of State for the Colonies has offered, in the event of the Colonies joining the postal union, to continue the free conveyance of Australian mails between the Colony and London and vice versa.

[special to press association.] London, April 2. It is reported that the Fenians are sending infected linen to ladies whose husbands are obnoxious to the Fenian cause. The Italian Government deny that they have entered into a formal alliance with Germany and Austria. An encounter has occurred between ths Albanians and Montenegrins, resulting in thirty-four being killed. Patrick Egan, the treasurer of the Land League, and Sheridan, who is supposed to be implicated in the Phoenix Park murders, desire a convention to inquire into the affair. It is, however, believed they declare in favor of the use of dynamite. In France the Radicals are urging the expulsion of the Legitimist officers from the army. General Champenon and M. Leon Say are likely to replace General Thiberudine and M. Tirard in the French Cabinet. April 3. Another arrest has been made in connection with the landing of the case of explosives at Liverpool. More dynamite has been discovered at Cork, also a letter explaining the working of infernal machines. The Nihilists announce that the attack to be made at the coronation of the Czar next mouth has been arranged, and warn the guests to avoid being present.
The Spanish Government have resolved to strengthen their garrisons, and to add several new men-of-war to their fleet.
Several additional explosions of gunpowder have taken place in Rome, and the greatest uneasiness prevails in the city.
The Conservative party are highly incensed at Lord Randolph Churchill's recent attack upon the Right Hon. Sir Stafford ISTorthcote. They intend to present Sir Stafford Northcote with a memorial expressing their full confidence in him.
The letter describing the infernal machines found in Cork was from O'Donovan Rossa. The Irish Poor Law Elections have resulted adversely to the Parnellites. April 4.
It is proposed to establish in the South of England a school for the special purpose of preparing youngsters for Colonial life. The " Invincible " defence fund has collapsed, and the prisoners having allied to have counsel assigned to them, the trial has been delayed.
Sir Wm. Jenner insisted upon her Majesty having complete rest. Owing to a serious division existing amongst the Irish Americana in the States, Mr Parnell is hesitating whether he will attend the convention. Egan and Sheridan are trying to induce the convention to declare it) favour of the use of dynamite for the purpose of terrorism. A joint Parliamentary Committee has been appointed to consider and report on the expediency of the proposed Channel tunnel.
