John Rigby, constable in the A.C. force, left the White Cliffs camp yesterday morning to assist Mr Joshua Jones and party with their horses round the point on the beach, on their way to Mokau. On nearing the tunnel he rode on one of the horses and led the other two. The horse he was riding turned restive while swimming, and he was not seen after rounding the point. It is supposed that he was washed off by a wave and drowned. Captain Messenger went with a boat's crew at once to the spot and the men dived without result. In the evening grapnels were obtained and the body was recovered in about eight feet of water close to the cliff. GALE AT OAMARU.—A VESSEL ASHORE. Oamartj, April 1. During Saturday the heaviest seas that have been experienced here for years swept into the bay and broke over the breakwater. On Saturday evening, as the schooner Friendship, which had come up from Port Chalmers, was attempting to come in under shelter of the breakwater, a heavy sea struck the' vessel and smashed the wheel. Signals of distress were hoisted by the captain and both anchors let go. The crew had for safety to take shelter below, as every wave was breaking over the vessel and sweeping her decks. The seas increased and the vessel gradually dragged ashore. About 8 o'clock, the captain finding the schooner near the shore slipped the anchor and came ashore. The vessel being in ballast was thrown pretty hign upon the beach. The crew were with assistance brought ashore safely. The Friendship appears to be uninjured and will probably be launched again. The vessel is insured. The Friendship at the time of the accident was some distance from the breakwater and under the full force of the sea. The weather has now cleared.
