The Speaker of the House of Commons has vetoed the motion prohibiting the protection of the House of Parliament by a detachment of troops. Evening. Two men named Dasey (? Casey) and Flanaghan, who were recently arrested at Liverpool, have been arraigned at the local Police Court on a charge of illegally landing explosives and remanded. It is announced that Lord Justice Brett will succeed the late Sir George Jensel as Master of the Rolls. It is currently reported in Continental and political circles that Austria, Germany, and Italy have agreed to endeavour to avoid a conflict with France, but at the same time to join in repelling any attack that may be made on that Power (sic). It has been agreed between the English and Spanish Governments that Rodriguez and Castillo, two of the Cuban refugees who were surrendered to the Spanish Government by the police athorities at Gibraltar, shall now lie released, but that Macco, the leader of the Cuban rebellion, shall be detained in custody as a prisoner of war. Paris, March 31. Louise Michel, the notorious female Communist, has been arrested by the police. St. Petersburg, March 31. It has transpired that the police have succeeded, to-day, in surprising the Nihilist rendezvous, where a large number of members of the Secret Society assembled. A severe struggle took place, but ultimately eight persons were arrested, one of whom, however, committed suicide while in the hands of the police. A quantity of dynamite was also seized on the premises. Washington, March 30.
Intelligence has been received here that the Apache Indians have taken arms, and raided the white settlements iu New Mexico and Arizona territories, and have massacred 50 Europeans. The Apaches threaten to annihilate the settlers, and Government has depatched a strong body of- troops to the latter's assistance.
[special to press association.] London, March 26. It is believed in Trebizond that Russia will occupy Armenia iu the spring. An eruption of Mount Hecla has occurred. The Khedive proposes that Prince Hassam shall command the army in Soudan. March 27. It is stated that " Number One," who it> is supposed has escaped to Mexico, is a commercial traveller named Tynan. It is probable that the Hon. Sir Charles Tupper, K.C.M.G., Minister for Railways and Canals in Canada, will succeed Sir Alexander Gait as High Commissioner. The Spanish Government intend to heavily fortify a position commanding the Straits of Gibraltar. Telephone communication has been established between New York and Chicago, a distance of over 700 miles, and is being worked with great success. It is intended to raise the Marquis of Lome to a Peerage. The Hon. Timothy O'Howe, Postmaster General of the United States, is dead. A company is being formed here for the purpose of purchasing Mr O. Fisher's Queensland Station. The capital of the company will be £400,000. March 28. The further revelations which have been made in connection with the Phoenix Park murders will, it is expected, lead to the implication of one Home Rule member of Parliament.
During the progress of a meeting at Paris on the night of March 9th a large quantity of explosive material, which had been secreted in the hall, was discovered. The circumstances surrounding the affair lead to the belief that it was the result of a carefullyarranged plot, and is supposed to be the work of Socialists.
A strike has occurred amongst the journeymen bakers at Cork. They demaud a number of concessions from their employers, who refuse to yield, and the strike is rapidly assuming formidable proportions. Severe weather has been experienced in the south of England. Heavy snow has fallen in London throughout a whole day.
An accident occurred on March 9th on board H.M.S. Defiance, by which 20 seamen were seriously injured. Russia has submitted a proposal to the Great Powers to the effect that they should unite in arranging a scheme for the suppression of secret societies. The war vessel Lepanton, which has been constructed to the order* of the Italian Government, was safely launched on the 9th March.
The ship Teutonia has run aground in the Suez Canal. Every effort is being made to get her off, but so far without success, and in the meantime she completely blocks the Canal, and renders navigation impossible. ♦ LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
