ME. ARCHIBALD FORBES.
This celebrated War Correspondent returned from his visit to Hokitika last evening, and at eight o'clock delivered in the Theatre Royal his first and only lecture in Elumara. The subject chosen was that in which Mr Forbes has made his name famous throughout the civilised world for his graphic accoirnts, and has now come to this hemisphere verbally to relate, only, of course, in a very condensed manner, viz., the "Experiences of a War Correspondent." There was a large though not fall house, and on his appearance on the stage of the theatre Mr Forbes was greeted with much applause. He proceeded to explain the duties of a war correspondent, and dwelt upon the dangers to which he was frequently exposed in his eagerness to obtain the latest and
most reliable intelligence of the various battles or engagements of which he was a witness. His account was in the main a narrative of his own career, and he thoroughly riveted the attention of the audience with anecdotes and his personal reminiscences of the field of battle. His adventures were described so graphically and with such humorous and telling effect that the sympathies of the audience were frequently aroused to applause, and their attention enchained throughout. We purpose giving fuller details of this interesting lecture in another issue. Mr Forbes spoke without intermission for about one hour and a-half, and at the conclusion of his discourse loud applause greeted him.
