BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The following other business was - transacted at the meeting of the Council on Thursday evening ; pi'esent—His Worship the Mayor (W. Barnett, Esq.), Councillors O’Hagan, Anderson, Mulvihill, Horne, Burger, Carey, and Rudkin. The Town Clerk brought up the Finance Committee’s Report, and the several accounts, amounting to £lO2 3s 6d, together with Garven’s account for £3O, were passed for payment. The follosving applications received from persons willing to fill the offices of Registrar of Dogs and Inspector of Nuisances, at a salary of £25 per annum, of which there were eight, were opened, viz., Messrs J. Henderson, J. Tuckey, Geo. Stewart, Thos. Chalmers, F, Thompson, Geo. Grams, Jno. Monahan, sen,, Jas. Thompson. It was resolved that the list of applicants be reduced by ballot to four, and after-

wards to two, and that Mr Janion and the Town Clerk act as scrutineers. Finally, on the motion of Cr. Care} 7 , seconded by Or. Mulvihill, Mr Juo. Monahan, sen., was elected to fill the offices. Cr. Carey moved—“ That a lamp 1 e erected at or near the gate at the Recreation Ground.” Cr. Anderson seconded the motion. Or. Burger moved an amendment—'‘That a lamp also be erected at the junction of Tui and Third street, and that the matter be referred to the Public Works Committee.” He thought it was more required there by the general public. The amendment was seconded by Cr. Mulvihill. Cr. Rudkin thought that under the present circumstances of the Conncil they should draw in instead of increasing their expenditure. The amendment was carried and became the substantive motion, when Another amendment was proposed by Cr. Rndkin, and seconded by Or. Horne—“ That the whole question of additional lamps for the town be referred to the Public Works Committee to report upon.” This amendment was carried, put as the substantive motion, and adopted. Cr. Rudkin by previous notice of motion, preposod—“ That steps be taken for letting the Recreation Ground for grazing purposes, when not otherrequired for public amusements.” Cr. Anderson seconded the motion. Cr. O’Hagan moved as an amendment—“ That the question of letting the Recreation Ground be referred to the Public Works Committee to report upon.” Cr. Burger seconded the amendment. Cr. Horne moved as a further amendment—“ That as the Recreation Ground was intended for the use of the general public, it be not let for any other purpose.” Cr. Carey seconded. The amenement was lost on a division. Finally an amendment by Cr. Burger—“ That a Committee consisting of The Mayor, Councillors O’Hagan, Carey, Rudkin, and Horne report at next meeting of the Council on the advisability of letting the Recreation Ground.” This amendment was seconded by Cr, O’Hagan, carried, put as a substantive motion, and then adopted. Cr. Burger asked leave to move—- “ That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the County Council in reference to the continuation of the road from Sedon street to the Beach.” £IOOO had been granted for this purpose, and and as yet nothing was done. This concluded the business of the meeting.
