Intelligence is to hand from Antananarivo that a French gun boat has arrived at Tamative, the chief port of Madagascar, and that four other vessels have gone to other ports on the northern coast, which are claimed by the French, The Malagasys are very much excited at this step on the part of Fiance, and are preparing for war. Major Tucker, of the Salvation Army, who was arrested here last month while parading the streets, has been sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, and four of his colleagues have been fined. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. RETURN VICTORIAN CRICKET MATCH. THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW SOUTH WALES. (Received March 9, 10.15 p.m.) Melbourne, March 9. The return match between Ivo Bligh’s team and eleven of Victoria commenced to-day. The home players went in first to the wickets, and when the stumps were drawn the score stood at 213, with seven wickets down. The highest contributions were—Bonar 54 ; Scott 29 ; Horan 37 ; Midwinter, not out, 55. The bowling and fielding of the Englshmen was excellent. The weather was fine during the day, and there was a very large attendance of spectators, Sydney, March 9. The Austral has been stripped of the coffer-dam, and is now ready for docking. The sculling contest for the championship takes place at Grafton to-morrow between Rush and Laycock. The latter is favourite.
