At the first quarterly meeting of the ncwly-elcctcd Licensing Committee, held yesterday afternoon, all the members were present, viz., Messrs J. O'Hagan, J. Hannah, H. Burger, W. Nicholson, and W. Close. The only application was for a transfer of Slattcry's Hotel from Michael Murphy to Miss Ellen Hayes, which was granted. We arc informed that " The Minister of Justice has communicated with Dr. Giles re matters relating to the Arab lira Licensing Bench not having been filled up in accordance with the Act. It appears the disqualification and resignation of Mr Sandle invalidates the seats of the members of the Committee."
It is notified in another column that, with reference to the "Property Assessment Act, 1879," and the "Rating A.ct, 1882," a Board of Reviewers will meet at the Resident Magistrate's Court House, Hokitika, on the 22nd day of March, 1883, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, for the purpose of hearing and determining objections in respect of property in the Borough of Kumara. Mr Weston has at last sent to the Speaker of the House of Representatives his resignation of his Inangahua seat in Parliament. We acknowledge receipt of a copy of "Crown Lands Guide, No. V.," published by the authority of the Minister of Lands. Special attention is directed to the alterations in this edition with respect to the Agricultural Deferred-Payment System, the Pastoral Deferred-Payment System, and also to the new clauses respecting the system of perpetual leasing of Crown lands. The price is 6d, and feither of the three maps accompanying it is worth the money. The Guide is invaluable to persons about to settle and seeking to buy land for that purpose. The Government has decided not to proceed against Davidson on the charge of attempted suicide. He has not shown any indication of wishing to destroy himself since his committal, but has been gloomy and morose. Adamant, winner of the Dunedin Cup, was subsequently sold for 140 guineas at the Provincial Sale Yards, Dunedin. E. C. Laycock is to row a match on the Clarence River, N.S.W., with Rush this month.
