We received by post to-day (2nd March) at noon the advertisement notifying that an extension of time had been granted for transmitting to the Borough Council of Kumara the Valuation List of the borough, on or before the 23rd February, 1883 ; and that the said valuation list is to be open for inspection, and objections thereto received until the 22nd March. It seems somewhat absurd, as a correspondent points out, that the Council should only have appointed its valuator on the night before the day they asked that the time for presenting the valuation list to the Council should be extended.
The valuation list is, according to the "Rating Act, 1876," supposed to be completed on first-mentioned date, and should be open for inspection for one calendar month. It appears pretty plain that as the valuation list is not yet made out that the Borough Council will either have to ask the Governor for a further extension of time, or forego the rate altogether. Henry Rainbow, tailor, who has been ailing in health for some time, and was readmitted to the Hospital a day or two ago, died somewhat suddenly at that institution yesterday afternoon. His remains will be interred in the Kumara Cemetery to-morrow, leaving Main street at half-past two o'clock in the afternoon. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Edward Murphy was again brought up charged with drunkenness and other offences, and was sentenced to pay fines amounting in the whole to £l2 and Cs costs. A fuller report will be given tomorrow. A prohibition order under section 167 of the Licensing Act was applied for by the police against supplying intoxicating liquor to Thomas Keiran, Kumara, and granted for 12 months. At a meeting of the directors of the Long Tunnel Company on Wednesday last, a call (the ni nth) of twopence per share was made payable at the office of the company on Wednesday, the 14th inst. Active measures are being taken to carry out the surveys ordered by the Government in connection with the proposed railway to the West Coast. The Christchurch Press reports:—"Messrs Blackett and Marsham, Government surveyors, accompanied by a party of eleven men, will leave by rail on Saturday for Waikari, for the purpose of commencing a survey of the country between the Red post and Reefton, with a view to determining the best route for a railway between these two places. Another party will start with a similar object from Reefton, and it is expected that the time occupied in the survey will be about four months. It will thus be seen that a thorough examination of the country is contemplated."
