We are coni]idled to hold over a notice of the lecture by the Rev. Mr Lawry last night, at the Wesleyan Church, several telegrams, and other intelligence. The respect in Avhich the late James Smart Avas held was manifest by the very large number who this afternoon followed his remains to their last resting-place. It is estimated that about 400 persons attended. An advertisement announces that the Gospel will be preached in the Town Hall this evening, by Mr G. F. Ahrens. The service will commence at half-past
seven o’clock. There will be no collection.
A public meeting is to be held at Dillman’s Town to-morrow evening to consider the advisability of introducing the electric light to enable the miners to sluice at night. Latest news from the Lyell states that John Davidson, the man who attempted suicide, and Mrs Gramatica, have made statements confessing their guilt or connivance in the murder of Denis Quinlan, near Lyell, on Sunday, 28th January. They have been committed for trial on the coroner’s warrant for the Avilful murder of Denis Quinlan, upon their own confession. The Wiflmott Combination Avill make their re-appearance in Kumara on Friday evening next. The deer shooting season commenced in Nelson on Saturday last.
