Alfred Austin has accepted, on behalf of young Scott, the challenge of Daniel O'Leary to walk anyone in the Australian Colonies. The great American pedestrian has jnst arrived in Melbourne, and Austin has written to him backins; Scott to walk a 24 hours' match for .£IOO or £2OO a-side, the match to take place in Dunedin. Wellington, February 9. With reference to the applications for assistance made by local bodies under the Roads and Bridges Constructions, 1882, it has been announced that about one-half the anionnt applied for
for main roads will be granted in respect of those applications that are in form. The Minister will confer with local bodies with a view of providing for the completion of some portion of the work.
For the moneys which were applied for in terms of section 38, for district roads and river works, the whole amounts asked for will be granted where applications are made in compliance with the Act. The above are subject to the conditions imposed by the Act being fulfilled. Applications not made in terms of the Act will have to be renewed in time for consideration with others to arrive on or before 30th June next. Auckland, February 9. At the inquest on the bodies of George White and Mary O'Neil, who were burned to death in the Wakefield street fire, a verdict of " Accidental death" was returned. The supposed cause of the fire was a defective chimney. Dr. Philson was presented by the Mayor on behalf of the citizens with an address and a gold watch valued at ,£IOO and a purse of sovereigns (£200), on his retirement from the Provincial Hospital.
