We learn that satisfactory progress is being made by Mr O’Connor, the contractor, in the work of constructing the Loopline Dam, which is to give this goldfield a more ample supply of water for sluicing purposes. The puddle trenches are nearly completed throughout ; the by-wash is being cut out 5 and material is being carted for forming the embankment. Timber is being cut on the ground ; the outlet-box trench is cut to receive the outlet box ; and a tramway is being laid to convey clay to the site. So that this essential work is being rapidly proceeded with. The mail coach from Springfield, with East Coast and Australian despatches arrived this afternoon at about two o’clock. It was announced in the Wesleyan Church last Sunday that Sunday School sermons will be preached to-morrow morning and evening by the Rev. J. Hosking. The hymns at both services will be sung by the children. The election of five persons to form the new Licensing Committee for the Licensing District of the Borough of Kumara will take place on Monday, the 19th day of February. Nominations are to be received at the Court House, Kumara (where printed forms of nomination papers may be obtained), up to noon of Monday, the 12th inst. The quarterly licensing meetings of the Licensing Committee for the Licensing District of the Borough of Kumara are appointed to be held at the Court House, Kumara, during the year 1883, as follows :—Ou Tuesdays—March Gth, June sth, September 4th, and December 4th, each day at noon. Tenders are invited by the.Westland County Council for tarring the two Arahura bridges—one at Thomson’s, being on the direct road between Kumara and Hokitika, the other at Harcourt’s Upper Crossing, on the Hokitika and Christchurch road. Tenders will be received uptill4p.ra. on Tuesday, the 13th inst. Specifications can be seen at Mr Harcourt’s, Upper Crossing Hotel, and at Mr Patrick Quinn’s hotel, Arab lira, as well as at the Council Chambers. Mr Renton continues to import largely various hand and treadle sewing machines. He has just landed at Hokitika 32 cases of these useful instruments in domestic economy, and states that early application will be necessary to obtain any on time payments.
