Christchurch, January 30,
On Friday last a fatal accident happened to a farmer named Timothy Cronin, of Southbridge. He was working his horse and dray, which was loaded with young blue gum trees, to be used in fencing, and on coming down a hillock on the road the horse began to trot, when the shaking of poles started him and caused him to bolt. It is thought deceased was in the act of getting down off the load to quiet the horse, when he slipped and struck his head against the wheel. An inquest was held, and a verdict was returned of “ Accidental death ” with a rider attached, “ That had the road been in proper repair the accident would probably not have occurred.” Dunedin, January 30.
A cable message has been received by Captain Rose, local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, to the effect that the British King, the first of the company's direct line of steamers, left Gravesend for this port on Friday last.
