[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Auckland, January 16. Great interest was taken here in the race between the Union steamer Manapouri and the mail steamer City of Sydney, which left here for Sydney last Tuesday evening. A special cable message from a passenger to the Star shows that considering the difference in time of the departure from Auckland the vessels made the voyage within five minutes of each other, both doing the distance in four days two hours, at an average of a small fraction over 13 knots an hour. Christchurch, January 16. Joseph Welchman, employed at Mr Seed's flax works at Southbrook, got his right arm entangled in the scuthching mill this morning, and his arm was torn completely off below the elbow. The unfortunate sufferer was conveyed to Rangiora, where he was attended by Drs. Williams and Dowries. Dunedin, January 16. An engine driver named David Thompson, of the 10 o'clock up train to Oatnaru, fell off the engine shortly after leaviug Palmerston, and received a severe blow on the forehead, which rendered him insensible. It is supposed he missed his footing while turning a sharp curve, and it is stated that he is suffering from concussion of the brain.
