KUMARA CORRESPONDENT HOKITIKA GUARDIAN.
[to the editor.]
Sir—lfc is a very strange but unfortunately true phase of human nature that it is addicted to gloat over the misfortunes of others, but when one by his position has it in his power ts either injure or support should become a tool for anyone else is a step even further than could be reasonably expected. I am sorry to see that the Editor, or whoever may be the conductor of the new journal called the Hokitika Guardian, has, perhaps unwittingly, allowed himself to be placed in that category by publishing a contemptible and scurrilous letter purporting to be a report from his Kumara correspondent, in which nothing appears likely to be of any benefit to the district, but is nothing more than. a covert tissue of abuse against one who has already suffered from the sting of his malice, and auotber with whom he is in no way connected except as manager of the Company in which he (the other) holds an interest. An old saying has it that " a man's deeds live after him ;" and if such be true (of which we have every day proof) I would tell him that he has no right to be the judge and the accuser, or "informer" rather; also, and to the Hokitika Guardian, that they should read and carefully digest such contemptible attempts to vilify ere publishing the same.—l am, yours,
One Who Likes Fair Play. Kumara, Jan. 11, 1883. [We quite agree with our correspondent. A newspaper column of more
mean and frivolous twaddle written in an attempt to injure fellow men we confess we have never read the like unto. We should not be suprised if the writer or his " great groat grandfather " were closely allied by relationship with the. individuals to the twain of whom he seeks to establish a simile. We have only heard one verbal expression upon it, and that was—" I wonder the editor put the letter in."—Ed. K.T.]
