♦ [NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Thames, January 5. Most welcome heavy rain fell here yesterday. The holidays being finished, the miners are all setting to work with vigor. The share market in the principal stocks has opened vei'y firmly with an upward tendency. There is a most confident feeling among the mining men regarding the prospects of the district. The charge against Gudgeon for attempted rape upon the wife of Ehrenfried, the brewer, comes on definitely to-morrow. A number of counsel have been engaged. The charge excites very general interest. Wellington, January 5. By a casting vote of the Chairman last night, the Mayor's salary was increased from £2OO to £3OO.

In the Chambers to-day, at the trial of the divorce case, C. O. Montrose v. Montrose and Baker, co-respondent, there was no appearance on the part of the respondent or Baker. The trial is fixed for next sittings.
