By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. BRITISH AND FOREIGN". COMMERCIAL. THE SETTLEMENT OF THE EGYPTIAN QUESTION. (Received January 5, 10.40 p.m.) London, January 4. The National Bank of New Zealand has declared a dividend of 3 per cent, for the past half year. The botal reserve in the Bank of England this day in notes and bullion is .£9,700,000, showing a decrease of £700,000 since last Thursday. The propotrion of reserve to liabilities has further fallen to 30 per cent. The Bank rate of discount remains at 5 per cent, and the market at 3£. Consols have advanced to 99f. (Received January 6, 1 a.in.) January 5. The negotiations which have been proceeding between France and England for the settlement of the Egyptian question have been closed without any agreement having been arrived at. The English Government, however, issued a circular, in which it explains its intention with regard to Egypt, and invites the Powers to recognise finally the principle of free navigation of the Suez Canal. Cairo, January 4. The remainder of the prisoners of the rebellion have beeu amnestied by the Khedive. Cape Town, January 4. It has been decided that a British force shall remain in Zulnland for a period of six months for the protection of Cetewayo on his reinstatement as King.
