LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(Received January 4, 12.50 p.m.) Brisbane, January 4. The Queensland revenue during last quarter amounted to £506,000, being an increase of £81,500 as compared with the corresponding quarter of 1881. For the half-year ended 31st December the revenue was £1,160,000, being an increase of £153,000 on second half of the previous year. The expenditure in the December quarter amounted to £857,000. (Received January 4, 12.50 p.m.) Adelaide, January 4, A fire broke out last night at the Post and Telegraph office in this city. It originated in the store room, but was fortunately discovered early, and was extinguished within two hours. The damage done was not serious, and principally arose from wafer and the hasty removal of goods. (Received January 4, 10 p.m.) Sydney, January 4. Sailed, this afternoon, the Union Company’s steamship Ringarooma, for Auckland. Mr Alexander Stuart is still engaged in forming a Cabinet, but the arrangements are not yet completed. Heavy rains have fallen throughout the country.
