Auckland, January 3.
Mr H. J. Smith, for many years commercial traveller for Arch. Clark and Son, warehousemen, poisoned himself at his residence at North Shore yesterday. He had been at the races with bis wife, and seemed in good health. After his return he went into his own room, and his wife going in some time afterwards found him lying down with two empty bottles of chloral. A stomach pump was applied, but unavailingly, the patient dying soon afterwards. It is not known whether it is a case of suicide or whether deceased had accidentally taken an overdose of the drug. No cause is known for suicide.
The body of Edith Wallis has been found floating outside of Raglan Harbor. Wanganui, January 3. This has been the hottest month known here for twenty years. Dunedin, January 3.
A large house at the corner of Stuart street and Moray Place, occupied as a boarding house by Mrs Russell, was burned down to-day. It was insured for £7OO. A lad named Boag, aged 12 years, was drowned in Shag River while bathing.
