(Received January 3,2 p.m.) London, January 2. A Commission has been appointed to inquire into the conduct of various Irish prisons. Mr Biggar, M.P. for Cavan, lias been committed for trial on a charge of villifying the Viceroy of Ireland. Bail was accepted. (Received January 4, 1.5 a.ra.) January 3. The London morning press announce that a loan of £4,000,000 for the Victorian Government will be placed in the market, the issue being at par. (Received January 4, 1.5 a.m.) Paris, January 2. The funeral of M. Gambetta will take place on the sth inst. The French Press, referring to M. Gambetta’s death, assert that the stability of the Republic will not in any way be endangered by the loss it has suffered, but it declares that concord is an imperative necessity at the present time.

Farther heavy rain has fallen in the southern provinces, and the floods in the Rhine Valley have extended, A number of towns and villages are inundated, and several persons have been drowned. Vienna, January 3 Severe storms of rain have been experienced in the northern districts of Austria, and disastrous floods have occurred, resulting in much destruction of property and loss of life. The Melbourne papers agree that the Englishmen’s display of cricket in the recent match was disappointing, and all express the opinion that the team was
beaten on their merits. Fifty thousand persons paid for admission during the three days' play. The various "Victorian goldmining companies during the past year paid dividends to the amount of £683,000, being a large increase on the previous year. The quartz mines paid £565,000, and alluvial £298,000. Sailed, this evening, the Arawata, for the Bluff. (Received January 3, 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, January .3. The new Parliament opened to-day, Mr E. Barton, one of the members for East Sydney, was elected Speaker, the re-election of Sir G. W. Allan being negatived by the Opposition by 51 to 47. Sir Henry Parkes announced that the Ministry had tendered their resignation to his Excellency the Governor. (Received January 4, 12.50 p.m.) January 4. Mr Alexander Stuart has been summoned by Lord Loftus to undertake the formation of a new Ministry, and is now engaged in the task.
