The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council will take place this evening. The poll for the election of another Auditor with Mr W, Nicholson (who has already been elected) for the Borough of Kumara takes place at the Town Hall tomorrow, between the hours of 9 a,m. and 6 p.m. The names of the persons who have been nominated are as follow : Charles Bernard, James Drummond, Alexander Miller, James Miller, James Richmond, Lawrence J. Spyer, Reuben Toms. In voting, burgesses must leave only one name uncancelled, or the voting paper will be invalid. By an order in Council under the hand of the Governor, dated the sth June, 18S2, the time for the preparation of the Burgess Roll of the Borough of Kumara has been extended. The official order appears in another column. The burgess and defaulters’ list is to be open for inspection until the 24th June ; the inspection of list of objections from 26th June to Ist July ; the sitting of the Council to determine claims and objections is fixed for the 10th of July ; and the burgess roll is to come into force on the 21st August. We have received Nos. 2 and 3 of the Parliamentary Debates, and several Bills, for which we have to thank the Government Printer. A resume of some of the Bills will be found under the heading of Political Intelligence. In the Gazette of the Bth inst. we notice among the lands permanently reserved from sale section 159 (in red) block XII., Waimea, Westland, reserved for addition to cemetery. The tender of Mr John Nolan has been accepted for the erection of nine berdans for the Welcome Gold Mining Company, iieefton. The contract price is £646.

The Hokitika Local School Committee introduced to the General Assembly a Bill entitled “ The Westland Educational District Sub-Division Act, 1882,” for the purpose of sub-dividing the Westland Educational District, as at present existing, and creating in lieu thereof two Educational Districts—namely, the Westland Educational District, to comprise the County of Westland and the Boroughs of Hokitika, Kumara, and Ross ; and the Greymouth Educational District, to comprise the Grey County and the Borough of Greymouth. The petition bears 2387 signatures, and when presented to the Assembly (the Times says) will probably have another couple of hundred signatures attached. The Central Board of Education’have introduced a Bill to establish a High School at Greymouth. Mr Gilbert, dentist, has arrived at Hokitika, and may be consulted at the back of Churches’ Hotel in that town. Letters of naturalisation have been issued to Henry Claussen, miner, Woodstock. mack was admitted to the Westport Hospital (the Times states) last Sunday, suffering from injuries to the groin, received through falling over a “face.” The sufferer was brought to Westport by Messrs Millikin, Tennant, and other comrades. The battery returns for the past week from the Keep-it-Dark mine are not (Tuesday’s Reefton Herald reports) so large, owing to the stopes having been carried through the rich shot of gold, which, however, will be crossed again with the return stopes. The total stone reduced was 198 tons, with a result of 3200z5. sdwts. of amalgam, and the retorted gold for the fortnight amounted to 280ozs. 4dwt. The Welcome Company had 5060z5. of amalgam for the week from the usual crushing of 90 tons. Mr J. Collins, of Nelson, has been appointed medical officer of the Royal Reefton Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F, The total cost of the Affghan? war is now estimated at namely £17,551,000 for military operations and £4,060,000 for frontier railways. A Brooklyn man received £2500 damages from a street-car company for the loss of a leg, and now the drivers have to stop their horses every few streets to pull enterprising citizens off the rails.
