BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, June 12. In the House of Lords this afternoon a Bill for legalising marriage with a deceased wife’s sister was rejected by a majority of four. Alexandria, June 12. Inquiries which have been made into the cause of the eraeute which occurred in this city on the evening of the 10th inst. have elucidated the fact that it originated in a street quarrel between a Greek and an Egyptian ; and owing to the strong ill-feeling prevalent in the city against European residents, the natives attacked some of the latter who were present, and the disturbance increased until it w;.s found necessary to call out the military. The statement that the British Consul was serious! v wounded during the emeute is fully confirmed, and it has been ascertained that the Italian Consul was also wounded, and that twenty persons were killed on the occasion. The recent disturbances in this city lasted for sever;! hours. During that time the shops of many Europeans were attacked and pillaged and the occupants maltreated , and as a precautionary measure, in case of any fresh outbreak, all the European women have been taken aboard the men-of-war and other vessels lying in port, further particulars which have transpired regarding the recent outbreak in this city show definitely that it arose thtough a Maltese stabbing an Arab soldier of the Egyptian Army, who was maltreating the'Greek Consul. It is also known that the loss of life was much greater than was at first supposed,
and according to the most nnthentic accounts 67 Europeans were killed during the disturbance. St. Petersburg, June 12. It is announced that Count Totskoi, Minister of Public Instruction, has been appointed Minister of the Interior vice General Count IgnatiefF, resigned, D 1 O - - LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, June 12. Arrived, this morning, the P. and 0. Company’s steamship Mai wa, with the Suez mails, dated London May 5. A rumor is current here this evening that Hanlan, the Canadian oarsman, is dead. The report, however, is discredited and requires confirmation. June 13. It is now definitely known that the report of the death of Hanlan was quite unfounded. An exhibition of electric appliances has been opened here. The ceremony was performed by the Governor. A telegram from Hong Kong reports that the steamship Bowen has left that port for Wellington. Sydney, June 12. The Marine Board has held an inquiry into the recent collision between the steamers Faivlight and Osprey, and it has been found that the former was at fault. The certificate of the captain of the Fairlight has been suspended for one month. The wreck of the Osprey has been sold for £690. June 13. Negotiations have been resumed at Newcastle with a view to the termination of the miners’ strike.
