Tenders are required by the Long Tunnel Company for forty sets mining timber. The tenders are to be sent in to the company’s office not later than four o’clock on Friday afternoon next. “ Juvenis,” a clever writer in the Otago Daily Times, thus writes of the member for Hokitika “Mr Fitz Gerald, a journalist and ex-magistrate, is brother to the Anditor*general by birth, and second cousin by talent. Many believe the Controller owned the cleverest pen and tongue in the Colony : his relative is very much after him m both. He will be more marked by facility and readiness than by sterling qualities. If the term is not unparliamentary, Mr Fitz Gerald will be a Bohemian in politics. His chance for a first turn of office is level with Mr Sheehan’s for a second. When speaking he will be heard, but his speeches will not lessen the labour of one teller or increase that of the other.” Fears being entertained for the safety of Mr Geo. Compton, builder, of Ashburton, who was reported as missing since Monday last, a search was made, and on Thursday the body of the unfortunate man was found in the bed of the Ashburton river, about two and a-half miles past Lancaster’s slaughter-house. Deceased, who was highly respected, leaves a wife and large family. The champion yield of wheat is reported by the Tapanui Courier as follows : From two bags of Oamaru seed wheat Mr Charles M‘Donald, of Crookston, has threshed out 125 bags of splendid grain. The land was specially prepared, certainly, but even then the yield is something wonderful, being close on 125 bushels to the acre.” On the 17th January, 1882, the headless body of a man was found near the Deep Lead Railway-station, Stawell, Victoria, and, at an inquest held subsequently, it was shown that the man had been wilfully murdered. The remains are believed to be those of one Charles Forbes, or Forbys, who worked on the Dimboola line of railway during the months of October, November, and December, 1881, with a man named Robert Francis Burns. The said Robert Francis Burns has since been arrested, and committed for trial at the Central Criminal Court, to be held at Melbourne on the 15fch day of August, 1882, for the murder of Charles Forbes, or Forbys ; but, as the prisoner alleges that Forbes is still alive, it is requested that the said Charles Forbes, or Forbys, if living, or any person acquainted with him, or able to give information about him since the date of his disappearance, should at once communicate with the Chief Commissioner of Police, Melbourne. The description of the missing man Charles Forbes, is as follows About 40 years of age, 5 feet 10i or 11 inches high, 14 stone weight, full sandy beard, and hair a shade darker. Supposed to be a native of the north of Ireland.
