The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, JUNE 13, 1882.

It is saict all official statement has been made to the effect that the Colonial Treasurer's health is steadily recovering, but he has not regained the use of his voice, so that unless a marked improvement xuces place before this evening, a further postponement of the Financial Statement *s iueviu'oli}.

The annual licensing meeting for the district of Hohonu (postponed from the 7th inst.) was held at the Courthouse, Greenstone, yesterday, at noon. All the members of the Licensing Committee were present, viz., Messrs James Blewman, (Chairman), John Hayes, Felix Furan, Donald S. Shaw, and Patrick Vl'.samara. Ten o'clock licenses were granted to Patrick Foley, Murphy's Hotel, Westbrook ; Edmund King, Adelphi Hotel, Stewart Robert Harris, Harris's Hotel, and Bridget Houlahati, Junction Hotel, Greenstone. In the case of the last-named, who is a widow, the Committee recommend the Grey County Council to refund £lO of the licensemoney. At to-morrow's meeting of the Westland County Council Mr Dnngan, the Chairman, will move—" That the road overseer be instructed to lay out a branch Hue of road from the Dillman's Town and Christchurch road to Larrikin's. The distance of proposed deviation is 30 chains or thereabouts. Plans and specifications to be prepared by next meeting of the Council." At the inquest yesterday on the body of Sarah Noble, aged 75, who hung herself on Sunday afternoon last, at Hokitika, after a short retirement, the jury found a verdict of " Suicide, while laboring under temporary insanity." A game of football is to be played tomorrow afternoon on the Reserve at 3.30 o'clock. All players are requested to attend, if possible. Tenders close to-morrow for forming the roadway and footpaths in Tui street. And to-morrow applications for the offices of caretaker to the borough offices, and for a sexton, are to be sent in. The annual celebration of the Bible and Crown Loyal Orange Lodge is to be held a little earlier this year than last. There is no doubt that the present season is much more favourable to the exercise and enjoyment of a good dance than when " In vain we sigh, and look around for night," but find that "night is far off, and hotter hours approach ;" so that this change will be hailed with satisfaction by all patrons of this festival. Tuesday, the 11th July, is the day fixed upon, and the advertisement states where tickets can be obtained. The Grey River Argus reports : " Another of the hardy band of pioneers who helped to open the Coast and develop its riches, passed away to his long home yesterday at the Greymouth Hospital.Deceased's name was James Fnlham ; he was about 56 years of age, and out of that he had been about thirty years a gold miner. For the last twelve months deceased had been working in the quarry. He had been a very powerful man in his time, but latterly showed signs of failing, until a few weeks ago he was stricken down by an attack of inflammation of the lungs, when he was taken to the Hospital, where he had been only eight days when he died. The body will be buried on Wednesday." Replying to questions put in the House of Representatives by Mr Seddon—The Hon. Mr Rolleston said the goldfields residence areas at present were practically freeholds. At all events they had a secure tenure, and he saw no necessity for a measure to make the residence areas, occupied and registered for a period of twelve months, freehold.—The Hon. Major Atkinson said the Government did not propose taking any steps for the reduction of the fees paid under the Land Transfer Act. He had never heard any complaints as to these fees being at all exorbitant. An exchange says that at the Governor's levee, one gentleman came into the room and made a most elegant bow to the honorable Richard John, of Kumara, and then walked orrt quite satisfied with himself, utterly ignoring the presence of the Governor. He evidently had mistaken the " Irrepressible" for his Excellency. A correspondent sends the Nelson Colonist the following conundrum for publication :—Why can the Union Steamship Company do more than the great Napoleon ever could7—Because it can bully Nelson, snub Picton, ami slip into Wellington whenever it pleases. Two of the UnioTi Steamship Company's new steamers—the Mahinapua and the Omapere (the Otago Daily Times informs us)—are intended for the West Coast coal trade, the latter carrying 700 tons on light draught, to trade exclusively with Westport. As showing the progress- that is being made in opening up the Westport coal trade, it may be mentioned that, hi addition to the above two steamers, five others are on the way to the Colony or aire being built : two for the Westport Coal Company, to carry each GOO tons on 10 feet ; two for Captain Williams, of. Wellington, to carry each

500 tons ; and one of similar carrying capacity for a Ceristchurch capitalist. The coal is gaining daily in public estimation. It has recently been tried on H.M. vessels at Wellington, and we are informed that H.M.S. Nelson is now taking in 400 tons for her next voyage.
