We inadvertently omitted from our report on Saturday of the licenses granted at the annual licensing meeting, last Friday the name of G. R. Rudkin, to whom a bottle license was granted. A mistake was also made in the name of the Jsofcel transferred to Mir Louis Ziegler from Mr E. Blake. It should have been EmpireHotel, not Albion Hotel. The Parliamentary correspondent of the Christchurch Press telegraphs that in reply to a question asked by Mr Hobbs, the Hon. W. "Rolleston replied that "The Government by its own officers, will cause a flying survey, with the view of ascertaining the shorbest route fti continuation of the railway from Kumara [?] to Awanui, viz., Waihau [f\. They preferred this course to the granting of a premium, as it would be equally efficient and more economical." Awanui is probably the only correctly-apelt place, and as this is in the Bay of Islands,, 214 miles north of
Auckland, the proposed railway can have no reference to this town. Mr R. Hobbs is member for the Bay of Islands. Kaitriia is probably meant instead of Kumara, which is distant from Awanui about five miles.
Replying to Mr Seddon in the House of Representatives, the Hon. Mr Rolleston said a vote would be asked for the purchase of a diamond drill and rock boring apparatus. These would be hired ont to local bodies for use on easy terms, and the Government would inquire if these machines could be manufactured in the colony.—ln reply to another question to Mr Seddon, the Hon. Mr Johnston said the penny postal system would mean a loss of £20,000 per annum to the colony, and under the circumstances it was not intended to introduce the system here. A notice of motion is on the order paper of the House of Rpresentatives to amend the present Licensing Act, making the hour of closing eleven o'clock instead of ten.
A novelty is open at billiards, and as an inducement to good play Mr Seebeck is offering to competitors a prize of £1 for the highest individual score in' a break in the ordinary English game ; and 10s. for the second highest. Breaks during the day will be twopence, and at night threepence. The balls will be placed in the most advantageous positions for making a good score, the red being placed four inches from and opposite to one of the two middle pockets and the white eight inches, or four inches behind the red. Of course players will be handicapped accordingly to their known proficiency in the game. The tournament will be open till 12 o'clock at night on Monday, 3rd July.
Parties seeking investment can now secure a good hotel, situate in Seddon street, and at present in the occupation of Mrs Cooney, from whom fuller particulars can be ascertained.
At 2 p.m. yesterday (the West Coast Times reports) Mr George Farrell reported to the police that he had just found an old woman, named Mrs Noble, hanging dead in the house of her son-in-law—Mr George Kohloff— at the corner of Bealey and Weld streets. Sergeant Moller and Constable Macdonald went at once to the place, and found the deceased partly dressed, and lying on the floor of a bedroom. There was a discolored mark, apparently caused by a thin piece of rope, around the throat, aud a piece of rope with a loop in it, was lying under the body. Another piece of rope had been tied to a nail in the kitchen, and brought over the bedroom door, where it had been tied to a nail. The deceased must have knelt on a box behind the door, and, after fixing the line, let herself drop on to the floor where she was strangled. Deceased was a feeble old woman, about 75 years of age ; and, according to her daughter's (Mrs Kohloff) statement, has lately shown suicidal inclinations. She has been living with her son-in-law for some time. Mr Kohloff states that he gave deceased a cup of tea in bed yesterday morning, and, some time subsequently, gave her a glass of brandy hot. Mr and Mrs Kohloff left about noon to dine with a neighbour, the deceased being still in bed. On returning about 2 p.m., with Mr Farrell, they found the deceased hanging in a kneeling position. Dr. James was sent for, but pronounced that life had been extinct for probably two hours. An inquest will be held this day, at the Pioneer Hotel. Mr T. B. Louisson, who has resided in Nelson for twenty-seven years, expired recently. He was a painter by trade, and devoted much attention to the manufacture of paint from Collingwood hematite, Bosea Easton, a member of the Mastodon Minstrel Troupe, was on Wednesday last, the Dunedin Herald reportss brought before the R.M. on a charge of having deserted his wife, Elizabeth Easton, in Christchurch, leaving her without means of support. The accused denied the charge* stating that although he knew "the party" he was not married to her. His Worship said that on the sworn information be bad no alternative but to reiuand the accused to Christchurch. Later in the day Easton reappeared in Court submitting a telegram received from the complainant, who offered to withdraw from- the proceedings if he paid £lO, or if the Magistrate made art order for the payment of that sum by instalments. The accused now paid the £lO, upon which Mr Carew discharged him from, custody, A special telegram to the Melbourne Age says that it is reported at Vienna that the Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of the Queen, is betrothed to Prince" William of Hesse, younger brother to the reigning Duke of Ludw% 4th, who married the Princess Alice. Prince William is 36 years of age. Her Majesty the Queen has lived 21 years as a maiden, 21 years as a wife, and I 21 years- aa- a widow. j
