The funeral, of L'U’d Frederick” Chven- * 1 isii took place 10-dey at Chatsworth, Derbyshire. Fully fifty thousand persons were pr'sent, including members of the Ministry, and members of both Houses of Parliament.
It is announced that Leonard Courtnoy, M.P., Under Secretary for the Colonies, has been appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury vice the late Lord Frederick Cavendish, and that the Hon. R. Evelyn Ashley, parlia mentary secretary to the Board of Trade, lias been appointed to succeed Courtney as Under Secretary for the Colonies.
In the House of Commons to-da> the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone introduced his bill providing means for the better repression of crime in Ireland. The salient features of the measure are as follow ;—The appointment of a Commission of Judges to'try cases without juries in disturbed districts; dotnicialiary visits by the police j the expulsion from Ireland of foreigners who may be considered dangerous j and the summary conviction of night prowlers. The Executive is also to be invested with the widest powers for dealing with illegal socities’ meetings and inflammatory journals. The operation of the measoie is to extend over a period of three years. The bill was read a first time this aftorn-am. The Parmdlite members consider the measure uii'-ces-saii'ly stringent, ami inveigh against it in strong terms. May 12 The London press generally approve of the provisions of the bill introduced by Gladstone for the adoption of repressive measures in Ireland. Parnell is now under police protection in consequence of ihrfeateuing letters, which he has received in regard to his action in supporting the Irish policy of the Government. = — LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, May 13. The steamship Te Anan, which arrived last evening from Bluff, encountered a most furious gale, which lasted during the Whole of Sunday and Monlast. The seas were very high and most dangerous, but the vessel behaved admirably. The passengers, on arrival here, presented an address and purse of sovereigns to Captain Carey, Mr Russel! (mate), and Mr Macewing (chief engineer). Hie s.s. Tamar arrived here yesterday from Hobart, after a passage of 11 day--’, during which she encountered a most terrific gale. Sydney, May 12. The Ministry invited Archibald Foibes and a large party to an excursion to the Zigzag, on the Blue Mountains.
