At the last meeting of the Westland County Council the Chairman moved the following resolution, which was carried : “That this Council desires to bring under the immediate attention of the Minister of Mines, the urgent necessity of securing an increased water supply for the Kumara, Goldsborough, and Stafford districts, and would respectfully urge that early provision be made to carry out so essential a work. That the construction of No. 2 dam, Kapitea Creek would go a long way to meet so much needed a want for these several goldfields, and that having the development of our goldfields in view, with the retention of our mining population so indispensible to our prosperity, that this Council strongly recommends so important a work to the favourable consideration of the Minister of Mines.” The following reply has been received : “To the County Chaiuman, Hokitika. “Telegram of County Council, forwarded by you, received. Will have due sideration. W. Rolleston. “Wellington, May 13, 1852.” An accident of a rather serious nature occurred at Callaghan’s on Saturday. A miner named James Hamilton was working in his claim, when a slip of gravel and boulders took place, and he was thrown down. He was speedily rescued from the fallen debris, but it was discovered that one of his legs was broken. He was at once removed to the Hokitika Hospital. The Kumara Miners Committee are requested to meet at Mr Peters’ hotel, Dillman’s Town, to-morrow evening. As the future welfare of the miners of this district is announced to be “at stake,” it is hoped there will be a large attendance of members of the Committee. The annual election of two auditors for the Borough of Kumara will take place on Thursday, the Ist of June next. The nomination of candidates for those important offices will take place on Wednesday in the previous week. Burton’s Royal Australian Circus arrived in Kumara from Hokitika to-day;, and, as the Recreation Ground is still soft with the recent heavy rains, permission has been given to hold the equestrian exhibition in the State School playground. It is not necessary for us to say "much of them. An exhibition which has been established for over thirty years, and possesees at the present time the most daring riders, graceful gymnasts, and trick horses which have ever performed in connection with this exhibition, will be sufficient inducement for everyone to have a look at the wonderful antics which it is possible for men and horses to achieve. Four clowns accompany the circus. It will be opened to-night. A press telegram states that it has been resolved to form Graham’s Waivvera Hot Springs’ Institution (in the provincial district of Auckland) into a company. Three shares were taken in the rooms. Graham is said to have had an offer from a Dunedin capitalist, but preferred to have the springs Auckland owned.

Two vessels, the Benvonue and the City of Perth, went ashore in Timarn harbor yesterday within a short distance of each other, and latest accounts state that seven or eight lives have been lost. Mr Tait, photographer, will continue at his studio in Main street to-day and to-morrow. Persons desirous of having cartes do visite taken need not consider the inclement atmosphere ; Mr Tait can secure a good picture in any weather. A petition from residents in the North ern Hundreds to South Australia has been presented to the Chief Secretary for the Governor, praying that Parliament be summoned immediately to afford relief to distressed fanners.
