The polling of the ratepayers of the Borough of Kumara on tb.3 water scheme took place at the Town Hall to-day, but the proceedings did not seem to excite much interest. It will be remembered that a short tine ago the Government resolved to issue annual season tickets entitling the holders to travel on any part of the New Zealand railways for the sum of £SO per annum. The idea was then looked upon in some quarters as a probable failure, but now that it has been put in practice, though only recently, the results so far auger well for its success. In Dunedin over 20 such tickets have been applied for, and the issues in the other chief towns of the Colony are also nearly equally large. The Otago Daily Times oi tiie 2'4th says:—With regard to an item of Australian news which appeared in our Friday's issue, stating that the Westport Company had. secured a large Victorian Government contract for the supply of coal the statement is not quite correct. The Company were pressed to tender, but in consequence of the delay on the part of Government in proceeding with the harbour improvement works at Westport, had to decline, and also to refuse several other large contracts in Australia. The" few small cargoes the company have been able to send ito Melbourne have cr&ited quite a demand for the coal, and it is therefore disappointing that there should be delay in a matter which is of the highest importance in the Colony, and which wduld provide the means of developing an almost unlimited coal export. [The item referred to stated that th. 3 Westport Colliery Company had secured a Victorian Government coal tender of 50,000 tons at 10s per ton.]"
