It ia highly improbable that the fall particulars concerning the recent hole-and-corner meeting between the Governor and Sir George Grey will ever be made known to the people of New Zealand. When the direct representative of her Majesty descends to unconstitutional behaviour such as Sir Arthur Gordon has thought fit to indulge in, it is baiely within the range of possibility that he will fully unbosom himself to his responsible advisers, or any one else. And now we are told that his Excellency is greatly surprised and annoyed at the almost universal storm of indignation which his conduct has provoked. He seems to have eutirely forgotten that the people of this colony have lived under a constitutional form of government, and that in the event of any of their undoubted rights and privileges being tampered with, they would take immediate steps to lay their giievances before the throne. No one is satisfied with what has been done, and Sir George Grey least of all. The old gentleman has simply been made a fool of; there is no doubt about that. It is almost impossible to realise what his state of mind would be when he received the vice-regal message. No one knew better than himself that the proceeding was highly irregular and improper. He was perfectly aware that such a thing had never before been done by any previous Governor, and he must have felt in his innermost heart that if it had been done or attempted to be done by anyone who differed with him in politics, he himself would have denounced the transaction as interfering prejudiciously with the most sacred rights of the entire human race. But the lust of ambition was too strong to be resisted. An opportunity offered itself for regaining power which would place him in the much-coveted position of being able to discharge his 1.-ng-pent-up wrath on the heads of his opponents, or as he calls them, his " enemies." Could he once again be Premier, what could he not do with the crowd of new members in the House 1 As for the Legislative Council, he could do what he had done before— pack it with personal supporters. If by any means he could secure a majority, was there not the chance of the elective governorship being carried out? Who would be Governor but himself? Then he would be in a position to carry out his long-cherished scheme of vengeance against the authorities in Downing street. Then he would have achieved what to him would have been the summit of earthly happiness. And then, for all his fond hopes to be blighted, to be un-Kawaued, and hurried off to Wellington post-haste, for a private and confidential palaver which was destined to end in whnt may be termed mutual recrimination. This was, indeed, too bad, and nothing can mend it. He returns to his island home, a sadder, probably an angrier, but ce tainly a wiser, man. He has been taught a lesson which lie should never forget. On the advent to office of Sir Arthur Gordon, some political prophet predicted in the most distinct manner that the very bonds of friendship which connect the new Governor with the old one, would eventually, and at no distant period, bring about a disruption of old ties. This has bei>n accomplished, and according to the most reliable authorities, we now find them " far as the poles asunder." The mail coach left the Bealey this morning at the usual hour, witli East Coast and Australian despatches, and the Kumara portion reached the post-office here at 315 p.m. Mr llugg's coach arrived at about the same time.
The fire-bell sounded an alarm shortly after four o'clock this afternoon. The cause was said to be a chimney oh fire in Seddon street.
On Saturday, Ist April, the body of Janes Dooley, who was drowned in the Buller a short time since, was found by a miner named Henry Swain, about two hundred yards below where the accident occurred. The body was lying across a snag; the hands were clenched, and mouth open. • His remains were interred in the Junction Cemetery. "While there is life there is hope" is well exemplified in the following, which is from the Inangahua Times :—"By a letter recently received from home, Mr Alfred Smith, dairyman of this town, has received news of the most remarkable and inexplicable recovery of his sister from long illness. It seems that she had been bedridden for no less than twenty-five years. All the chief physicians and surgeons of London gave the case their best consideration, but all remedies tried were not successful in improving the condition of the patient, neither, as we understand, could they even correctly ascertain the cause of the disease. Shortly, however, before the last mail left, to the equal astonishment and joy of the sufferer's friends, and no doubt herself, the ailment (whatever it was) suddenly left her, and one morning she was able to get up, dress, and walk down stairs, a cured woman, and this without drugs, potions or other agencies. The case is a most remarkable one, and must unquestionably have attracted a great deal of attention in medical circles. Messrs Girdwood, Lahman arid Co. will sell at the Preston Yards, Greymouth, on Monday next, prime bullocks, fat wethers, prime fat and store pigs. Mr Julius Hyman (the Herald states) is the first member of the Hebrew persuasion in Dunedin who has been honored with the commission of the peace. To this result his own highly honorable career in New Zealand and elsewhere has no doubt largely contributed ; and his appointment must be regarded as complimentary both to his co-religionists and to himself. The Kennedy family are touring in America, and attracting large audiences.
