BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 17. Both Houses of Parliament meet today, for the despatch of business after the Easter recess. In the House of Commons, the Right Hon. Gladstone, replying to a question, stated that the liberation of Cetewayo and his restoration to his former position as King of the Zulu tribes, were within the bounds of possibility if the inquiries which were being made should prove that this reinstatement was desirable and would be beneficial to Zululand. Trickett has returned from Hampshire, and has again gone into training at Putney. i April 18. A special commission has been appointed to try the case of Roderick M‘Lean, who attempted to shoot the; Queen, and who was committed foti trial by the Windsor magistrates on March the 10th. The corn mission held its first, sitting at Reading to-day. The body of the Right Rev, Bishop Barker, of Sydney, who died on the 6th inst., is to be buried at Barlow, Derbyshire, his birthplace. Evening. Surprise is expressed that Parnell, who, since being liberated on parole, has been visiting Paris, has not surrendered to-day as required by the anthorities. A report is current in London this evening that he has been shot whilst en route for England, hut the news has not been confirmed, and it is generally believed that he is still in Paris. Paris, April 18. A robbery of postal packages containing valuables ami securities estimated to he worth a million francs, was committed last evening from the Central Post Office in this citv. No clue to the perpetratqis of the theft has yet been obtained. Washington, April 17. A bill has been introduced in the Senate to authorise Government to repay to Great Britain the unexpended balance of the Geneva award in connection with the Alabama claims. • April 17. . The new measure recently introduced in the House of Representatives providing for the total exclusion of Chinese from the United States for a period ! of ten years was finally agreed to by ! the House last evening. |
