The Warden’s Court was opened this morning. Our report will appear tomorrow. The local option poll for the Licensing District of Hohonu, it is notified in another column, will be taken on Monday, the Bth day of May, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., at Mrs Lawrence’s house, Westbrook, and the Court House, Greenstone. The poll is for the purpose of determing whether the number of publicans’ or New Zealand wine or bottle or accommodation licenses may respectively be increased in the before-mentioned licensing district. A sitting of the Court of Appeal will be held in Wellington, on Monday, the Bth May. The programme of an entertainment which is to be given to-morrow evening at the Theatre Royal for the fund being raised to restore the Church of England parsonage is published in this issue. Besides several members of the Kumara Choral Union, the Stafford Philharmonic Society have kindly volunteered their services, so that there will be a variety of local talent to hear. Those who had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Porter at the “ Penny Readings” will be pleased to hear him again ; and the object is one that there is every -reason to expect that a good house will respond to the appeal. Besides the parsonage itself, which was only insured for about a fourth or fifth of its value, the Rev. Mr Holland lost a large and valuable library, and nearly everything that he and Mrs Holland possessed before the fire. By a Gazette notice dated Wellington, 7th April, “ His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint Thomas Lee Porter, Esq., M. 8., to be a Public Vaccinator, under ‘the Public Health Act, 1876,’ for the Kumara district.” We observe by the doctor’s advertisement that he has removed to the premises formerly occupied as a Union Bank. Thursday, at 2 p.m. is the day fixed for vaccinations. Dr. Porter’s hours for general consultation are from 12 to 1, and from 6.30 to 9 p.m. Mr W. C. Gilbert, dentist, has returned from his trip to Christchurch, and may now be consulted on matters pertaining to dentistry at his residence, Hospital street, Greymouth. Mr Maher’s large engine, which was lately removed from Larrikin’s Terrace to be taken to Woodstock rush, broke through a culvert on the Kanieri road yesterday whilst on the way up. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board at Hokitika yesterday ; present The Hon. J. A, Bouar (in the chair), Messrs Chesney and Robinson, the following business is reported by the West Coast Times to have been transacted ; —The following sections were put up to auction : Kumara town lands—Section 732, upset price £5, improvements, £2O ; purchased by J. to the application of Michael Fitzgerald to lease a portion of reserve No. 44, Waihinihini river. The matter was ordered to be reconsidered. Mr Bird, R.M. at Okarito, we are informed, is to relieve Dr. Giles, who goes on leave of absence-after Friday. The Reefton Herald is glad,to say that Mr Bowman will shortly be amongst them again, greatly the better-for his trip. A telegram was received by a friend of his in Reefton on Saturday last as follows : “ Leave for my fountain home on Monday. Health greatly improved. Recovered use of right hand;” Constable Bamfofd proceeded from Reefton to Wellington on Saturday morning last (the Herald states), having in his charge the stomach of the late MichaOl George Green, who it was proved by thb medical testimony has died from poisoning l , the symptoms being those of strychnine. This year there has been a large increase in the number of tourists who have visited Lake Wakatipu, and Queenstown all the summer has been full. There is a growing desire now, too, on the part of visitors to make the trip to Lakes Wanaka and Hawea, but the Queenstown people are accused of using efforts to dissuade those with such an intention from carrying it out, by magnifying the difficulties of reaching there. Really there are ho difficulties in the way, a day’s coaching through excellent scenery comprising the journey ; and once at Lake Wanaka the hotel accommodation is almost, if not quite, as good as at Queenstown. At Milton, last Tuesday week, a mile spin for £5 a-side was run between Mr W. M'Kechnie’s horse Speeler, by Roebuck, and Mr T, Keenan’s colt by Barwon. The latter, ridden by young Lilburne, had all the best of it for three-quarters of, the distance, where its opponent, ably piloted by Mr M. M‘Laren, forged up and, after a good tussle, just managed to win. Speeler carried about lOst, and Mr Keenan’s horse 6st. Bernhardt was not pleased with her reception in St. Petersburg, Russia. She is reported to have said contemptuously to a friend, while speaking of the Russians ; “ Their enthusiasm was of the same temperature as the climate. ”
