[new ZEALAND PHESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, April 14. Nothing Ins yet transpired regarding the interviews with the Governor yesterday. The following tenders were received for the Little Grey bridge (with approaches) contract :—Accepted : MTCenzie and Sutherland, Kumara, £3,364. Declined : Cochrane and Oxley, Reefton, £3,548 j M. O’Connor, Greymouth, £3,721 • J. Osborne, Reefton, £3,976 ) J. Maher, Hokitika, £4,027; J. Reynolds, £4,177. Christchurch, April 14. To-night’s Star says “We hear that a cable message has been received by a prominent politician of this island, informing him that Sir J. Vogel is preparing for an early visit to New Zealand. The reason assigned is that Sir Julius thinks the present political situation favorable for carrying out at some time the favorite idea of his of re-entering the area of coloni d politics. One of the promoters of the West Coast Railway scheme has received iiv formation by cable from Sir J, Vogel, to the effect that the prospects of an application to the London nlarket for floating the scheme are favorable. The Lyttelton Times this morning makes the following statement of facts :—“ A telegram has been received from him [apparently Sir George Grey is meant] by a gentleman in Christchurch, stating that be has been asked by his Excellency to form a Cabinet, and is prepared to submit a list of names on his arrival. An ex-rnerabOr for Dunedin is mentioned as likely to be Attorney-General without a seat in the Cabinet. We are in a position to state, however, that his Excellency did not ask Sir George Grey to foi'm a Ministry, but merely invited him to discuss the situation. Sir George must be under a misconception as to the nature of Sir Arthur Gordon’s communication.” A well-known architect in Christchurch was subpoened as a witness in a case at the District Court. He gave his evidence in such a way that the counsel who called him had to treat him as an adverse witness. Some notes that he had taken on the subject of the action were quoted to him sentence by sentence, ami he admitted that they were taken from personal observation, and that all in them would be true, bub he flatly denied that he had any recollection of anything criticised in bis notes, and swore that he did not know' what they meant. His evidence was given such a way that he was asked if lie had ever taken an oath in a Court before, which be confessed he had done - and his Honor eventually said lie thought it was useless questioning the witness further, as it was one of the most extraordinay lapses of memory he ever remembered. Dunedin, April 14. A Sydney telegfam in the Melbourne Age is as follows:—“A well-known New Zealand sportsman off ms to back four men in New Zeaknd to row any four in Australia in fonr-oitr outriggers, for £SOO aside, He will take £l5O to £IOO, and match Hearn, champion sculler of New Zealand, ttf row either of the brothers Edwards,- of Victoria, in the best boats. “Ye Old Englishe Fancy Fatyre,” which has now been open in Garrison Hall, Dunedin, since Monday, is such a success that it will keep open tlnoughout the whole of next week. The Union Steamshipping Company have received a cable message from London dated 12th Inst., advising that the Manapouri put into Lisbon with her engines disabled, but repairs are being proceeded with and she' will get away on the 25th, so that her arrival in Melbourne may therefore not be looked for until about the sth June.
