BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 8. The announcement of the retirement of Prince Gortschakotf has been received with general satisfaction by the European press, and the appointmeut of M. Giers as his successor is interpreted as indicating the adoption of an avowedly pacific foreign policy. The Australian and New Zealand mails, via San Francisco, which left Auckland on Februai*y 28, were delivered here to-day. The Times, commenting iu its issue to-day upon the announcement of the great land aale at Burrabogi, .New South Wales, states that it affords a splendid opening in Australia for English gentry who are seeking cheap land, health, and. occupation. April 10.' News has been received here that Parnell has been released from custody, and has left Dublin for England. Later. It has transpired that Parnell, who is now on hih way from Dublin, ha.« been released on parole for a week to enable him to vi*it Paris, where his sister, one of whose children has recently died, resides.
