Want of space compels ns to hold over our weekly mining report, the account of the Westland Ride Association’s meeting yesterday, and various other matters of local interest. The \\ estland portion of the San Francisco mails reached Lyttelton by the Hawea on Thursday evening, and were forwarded by the mail coach -which left Springfield yesterday. The Kumara portion, however, seems to have miscarried ; whether it has been taken on to Hokitika or forwarded by some other route, we cannot ascertain. A public meeting of the burgesses of Kumara is called by his Worship the Mayor for Thursday next, to consider the proposal for raising a loan for supplying the town with water. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt in Kumara about ten minutes past four on Thursday afternoon. A similar shock was experienced with more or less severity in various other parts of the colony, particularly a little north of Cook Strait.

Messrs Girdwood, Lahman and Co. will sell at the Preston Yards, GreymOuth, on Monday next, prime bullocks, grand fat wethers, lambs, and some very heavyweight and store pigs. The Extended Water-race and Sluicing Company’s property, Mount Ida, has been sold by auction, at £2035, to Mr John Hore, who has bought (the Chronicle understands) for a company consisting of himself, and Messrs L. Hore, R. Lawer, S. Ash, and James Brown. It is reported (says the Reefton Times) that John Callanan, the well-known local athlete, has been backed for £IOO to do the extraordinary height of sft. in a standing high jump, and the event will come off shortly ; a month or so back Callanan jumped 4ft. 10Jin. in a standing high jump, which establishes his claim to the championship of the colonies.
