GREYMOUTH RACES.

Notwithstanding the drawbacks (says the Argus) a very fair attendance mus tered on Saturday. It was computed that about 1200 persons were on the ground, over 800 of whom came from Greymouth by the railway, while the remainder came from Brunnerton and other places inlaud. The weather was very favorable until about 4 p.m. when a steady drenching rain set in; but that appeared to have little effect upon the majority, who remained until the last race—very fair evideuce that the sport was being enjoyed. The events in the order in which they were run are aa follow : Trial Stakes, 25 sovs, H mile; weight for age. Mr Frith's b m Mary Stuart, 5 yrs, 9st3lb ... ... i Mr Frith's br g Dick, aged, 9st 41b 2 This was a very hollow affair, and could not be called a race. Zoe was scratched, leaving only Mary Stuart, and Dick, both running in Mr Frith's name. Mary Stuart cautervd in first, the rider of Dick holding in might and main to prevent his horse making a race of it, which the little fellow seemed veiy anxious to do. Greymouth Jockey Club Handicap, 125 sovs. 2 miles; second horse 25 sovs. from stake. Mr S. Osborne's Longlands, aged, Bstl2lb ... °J ! Mr J. Robinson's gr h Satellite, aged, 7st 121 b 2 Mr Brimble's b g YVhaleboue, aged 6stlllb ... 3 Mr A. W. Dillon's br m Rore, 5 yrs, 7st 121 b 0 Mr J. Cameron's ch g York, a<*ed 9sfc 21b ... ° t> . 0 Mr S. Osborne's ch g Talent, 5 yrs, 9st 51b ... ... ... J o Mr Frith's g c Greyhound, 4 yrs, Bstl2lb ... ... o Eight entered for this race, but only seven started, Doncaster having broken down ditring his training. This "was a capital race, and afforded much general satisfaction. Satellite seemed bent upon winning. He took the lead, and for a time seemed as if able to keep it. Longlands certainly was holding his own so well as to look dangerous. Hir rider evidently knew what his horse could do, and did not call upon him until about 300 yards from home, when he responded gallantly, winning rather easily from Satellite, Whalebone a good third. The others were out of it. Time, 3min. 57|secs. Handicap Hurdle, 30sovs., 2 miles; second horse, osovs. from stake. Mr Frith's br g Dick, aged, 9st 12!b 1 Mr Osborne's br g aged, 9st 1011) ~. ... 2 Mr Brimble's br g Whalebone, aged. 9„t °J 3 Mr Dillon's b m Zoe, aged, 9st 61b 0 Dick at once went to the front, followed by Zoe and Shark, Whalebone in the rear; but it was soon seen that the race was between Dick and Shark, and very much in Dick's favor. It was a very cleanly run hurdle race, all the jumps being taken well with the exception of one hurdle being knocked down by Zoe, who broke down on the

second round. Coming home Shark was gaining upon Dick, and about to run between him and the fence, when, in response to his rider the latter horse inclined so much and so promptly in towards the fence as to render it impossible for the former to cut in between. On this point shark entered a protest, which was allowed by the Stewards, who awarded him the stakes. Railway Stakes Handicap, 40 sovs>, 1£ miles. Mr Dillon's br m Rore, 5 yrs ... 1 Mr Frith's b m Mary Stnart, 5 yrs... 2 Mr Cameron's ch g York, aged .. 3 This was a very good race. Mary Stnart was the favorite all through, and especially when Rore was seen to be flogging hard half a mile from home. The whip, however, seemed to possess some virtue in altering the fortunes of the race, for Rore came np on Mary Stuart, and noth withstanding the cation of the whip in the straight by young Fiith, Rore succeeded in first catching the Judge's eye. York an indifferent third. Mary Stuart was vevy heavily handicapped, carrying T4fl) overweight, otherwise the result would have been different. West Coast Produce Stakes, 20 sovs, f mile; for all horses foaled on "West Coast; weight for age. Mr A. Blair's b g JFieedoro, 2 yrs, ost 121 b 1 Mr Butler's ch h Try Again, 3 yrs, 7st 131 b 2 Mr Hall's b c Mutual, 6yrs, 9st ... 3 A very unsatisfactory race, Try-Again disappointing his friends by running off the course and throwing away all chance of the race. Mutual was never in it. There was very bad weather during the latter part of the afternoon. [By Telegraph.] [special to kumara times.] Greymouth, March 20. There was a good attendance to-day, and some fine racing. Goldfields' Handicap, 100 sovs., 1£ mile; second horse 20 sovs. from the stake.
