THE MINERS’ PETITION AND THE MAYOR.

[to the editor.] Sirt—lt is currently rumored that our Mayor Mr O’Hagan lias received a letter from Warden Stratford re the meeting at Dill man’s, and asking that the wishes of the miners in the matter be made known to him. Seeing the Council do not meet until Thursday next, a special meeting of the Council should have been held, or a public meeting called before the counterpetition praying that Warden Stratford be retained had been sent round for signatures. In a matter of such public importance hole-and-corner work such as this should not be resorted to. As a fact the petition is going round ; persons are asked to sign it on the quiet, and yet the only responsible person is John O’Hagan. Perhaps, seeing he can guarantee votes by the hundred at election times, he may have entered into a contract with the Warden to guarantee a certain number of names to this petition, and that H. A. Stratford shall be elevated to the high and mighty position of Altorney-General. If you are not made a J.P. for the colony after this, John, why, take some snuff and hand the box to your humble servant; it helps to clear the eyes, and clear eyes are required to peer into dark corners* YIOItANT.
