THE WOODSTOCK RUSH.
TO THE EDITOR KUMARA TIMES. I have had a few' letters lately from Kumara wishing my opinion relative to the new rush in the Kanieri district. Perhaps it may meet all ends if I ask insertion for a few lines touching the same in the Kumara Times. I have been to the ground, went down the prospectors’ shaft, saw the gold washed from two parts of a load, and, although asked by some ) ersons present what I thought of it and giving my opinion with reserve, yet it was plain to me that there were 3-iwts. or so of gold in the dish at the time, and I thought it would run between 4 and sd\vts. to the load. The gold is small and of a scaly character. The prospectors give every information to the public ; two of the party were washing with a cradle some dirt taken from the shaft, which is close at hand. The men conceal nothing, everybody about can see for themselves. The depth of the shaft is said to be 54 feet, and the depth of washdirt taken between 6 and 6 feet; it is a sort of shingle-wash, about two-thirds of which would be fine dirt. The wash is lying on a sandstone bottom j the heaviest part of it on the reef, and for about 18 inches in depth it is very tight. The wash is not a very heavy one. I could observe, in going down the shaft, that the sinking is through a kind of shingle; there is a little surface water, but not troublesome. I found on examining the bottom of the shaft that the prospectors had opened out one end of it, takin<» between 5 and 6 feet of washdirt, a portion of which, just referred to, was going through the cradle. As yet. no definite opinion can be formed of this discoveiy. It is not known whether the prospectors’ shaft is on a lead of gold or a patch of gold. Hie ground in the neighborhood is untried- there are about, eight or ten shafts going down, so that in a week or two, the value of the rush will be better kn,,w >‘- P. Dungan. March 10, 1882.
