On Saturday last t;he site for the new Waiau bridge the delay in which has caused continual complaints from the inhabitants of the district, was tixed by Mr Bell,- Government engineer. It is just, opposite the township, and the bridge will be 40 chains long. February 14. The child Abbott badly injured on Saturday, is dead, and one of the others is found to be much worse than was supposed. Mrs Abbott was sister to the late Dr. Campbell, and only a few months ago her mother had the misfortune to break leg. At the inquest on the body of the man Pyke, a verdict was returned that he died by poisoning, but there was uo evidence to show by vvhofti it was actministered. Mr Beetham, R.M., ruled to-day that an entry in a book was not sufficient to constitute a proof of debt, 'unless supported by some outside evidence. Wellington, Febnt'ary 14. John, alias" Thomas Smith, alais John M'Guinnes, was committed for trial on a charge of assault with' intent. The proprietor of the New Zealander Hotel was to-day fined £1 for allowing billiards to be played iu his house after hours. Mr Hunt, late Chief Secretary for Samoa, has instituted proceedings in the Supreme Court of Wellington, to recover £BOOO damages from His Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon, High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, for alleged assault and false imprisonment. Thames, February 14. Scarlet fever is apain showing out. The mines on the new find at Te Aroha are attracting attention, as they are considered very rich.
