The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1882.

The Returning Officer for the Licensing District of Arahura, A. Millar Eyes, Esq., notifies- that Wednesday, the 15th day of February, 1882, is the day appointed for the election of five persons to constitute the Licensing Committee for the said district. Nominations will be received at the Court House, Stafford (where printed forms of Nomination Papers may be had), addressed to the Returning Officer, up to noon on Wednesday, the Bth day of February, 1882. The boundaries of the Arahura Licensing District are thus defined in the New Zealand Gazette :—Commencing at the mouth of the Teremakau, up the river to its source ; thence southerly along the dividing range to the source of the Arahura River; thence following down the southern bank of the river to the sea-coast; and northwards along the coast to the commencing poir>t. The quarterly licensing meeting for the district of Hohonu is now fixed foiThursday, the 9th March, instead of the Bth, as formerly notified. A meeting of the Local School Committee was. held last evening. A report will appear in to-morrow's issue.

As the time approaches for the provisions of the Licensing Act to be enforced, there is naturally a flutter among publicans, or as they are henceforth to be styled, "innkeepers." There is also a flutter among the police in some places in connection with the same subject. A few days ago, verbal notice was given by the police to all the hotel-keepers in Timavu to close their houses at 10 o'clock, instead of 11 as formerly. They declined to act upon the instructions given* and the Licensed Victuallers Association sent a deputation to Mr Rolleston, who at once communicated with the Colonial Secretary. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before E. Barff, and T. Connell, Esqs., J.Ps., J. Rugg pleaded guilty to a breach of the municipal bye-laws, by allowing a chimney to catch fire. A fine of 5s was inflicted.

According to a return furnished by the Registrar General, and published in the latest number of the New Zealand Gazette, there are in Westland three persons registered under the "Dentists Act, 1880." two of whom reside in Greymouth, and one in Hokitika. In the whole of the colony there are only eight registrations under the Imperial Act. Altogether there are seventy-four dentists registered in New Zealand.

A correspondent of the Grey River Argns, telegraphing from Ahaura yesterday states :—" It is said to be likely that twenty-seven ratepayers will sue Claughsey, late councillor for Nelson Creek Riding, and contractor, for penalties not exceeding £SO each for breaches of the law. A very lively interest is taken in the matter."

A billiard match for £5 a-side was played at Reefton on Saturday evening last, between D. Twohill and T. M'Auley. The latter received 100 points out of 500, and proved the victor after a close contest. By the fire at Ashburton the public library, which contained about 800 volumes, was burned down. There was also a piano in the hall worth £7O. The loss is calculated at £IOOO. The South British had an insurance on the place of £SOO. A shepherd died on an out-station in the back country of New South Wales, and the police found the body in a fearful state. The shepherd's clog would not allow the police to approach, and it had to be shot before the body could be obtained for burial.
