The s.s Australia, with the December (ioloiiial mails; arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 24th ult., two days before time-table date. The City of Sydney, frith the December English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the IGth ult., two days late. She is due at Auckland to-day. Several misfortunes have occurred lately which have required medical treatment at the Hospital; Phis morning a boy named Joseph Goad, residing at Dillman’s, was chopping wood, when the axe he was using slipped and made a frightful gash across his right foot. And a man named M‘Neill, whilst working at some fluming on the northern side of the river, sustained a severe cut across the head, some four inches in length, Both patients are now as well as can be expected under the circumstances. A private rifle match took place at the butts on Saturday last between two second-class riflemen W. Williams and G, Woods, at 200, 400, and 500 yards. The match resulted in favor of \Vilhams by 1 point, as the following scores will show ;—• 200 400 500 Tl. W. Williams ... 22 21 15 = 58 G. Woods 2d 20 14=57 There was also a match between two scratch men, resulting as follows : 200 400 500 Tl. Sergt. Sampson ... 24 24 23=71 Sub-Lt. Robinson 23 21 25 = C 9 Volunteers are reminded of the usual weekly parade to-morrow evening. A good muster is expected, as, after parade,
the prizes won at the late Government district firing will be presented, and other important business having reference to shooting will be brought forward. The annual district meeting of the United Westland District Ancient Order of Foresters, took place this afternoon at the Lodge Doom, Kumara. There were present D.C.R. Chambers, Stafford ; D.S.C.R. Anderson, Kumara; and D.S. Sandle, Stafford ;. also delegates from Court Pride -of the West, Hokitika (P.DiC.R. Allen, and P.C.R. Thomson), Court Waimea, Stafford (P. D.S.C.R. Turner), Court Pride of Kumara (P.C.R. Dove, and Bro. J. H. King). The supper will be held at Pearn’s Buck’s Head Hotel, this evening at 8.30 o’clock. The members of the Kumara Choral Union are requested to assemble at the Public Hall this evening. A circular has been handed to us entitled “An Appeal to the Ratepayers of Hew Zealand.” It is issued from the Grand Lodge Office of New Zealand, Independent Order of Good Templars, by Mr J, T. Smith, the Grand Worthy Chief Templar, and has special reference to the new Licensing Act, 1881—the election of Licensing Committees, and the regulation of the number and inspection of licensed premises. It explains the power placed in the hands of the people by the polling which is required once in every three years, when a majority can control the issue of new licenses in any district, and urges the ratepayers to use this power when thAiime 7 amves. It also points out the advisibility of electing suitable men on the licensing committees. Mr John Tait, the renowned Hokitika photographer, announces his intention of re-opening his studio in Main street, on Wednesday next, for a few days, when he will be prepared to produce likenesses in the highest style of the photographic art.
